Cuarenta Y Tres
Results days always bring to mind the many debates people have had about grades and their validity as indicators or collections of old thoughts like how:
- Our school is some sort of statistical aberration, based on the IBO statistical bulletin, but no matter what other schools say, we don't cheat. We just work hard in varying degrees.
- That being said, intellect and hard work are not always directly proportional to the grades. Simple observation of what everyone got and how they worked during their IB years do not always match. We need to stop judging our worth by our grades - and claiming that you do so only because society does so doesn't solve the problem for the future. If we don't change how we think of it, nobody will.
- People need to be more sensitive about their reactions. It's okay if you're not happy about getting 41, but it would be considerate to remember that someone beside you might have less than 40. Lamenting loudly isn't nice. Also, saying that someone who didn't score "well" must have just been lazy isn't fair.
- We need to rethink our grades perspective because it doesn't feel like 45 is the unusual achievement that it used to be. What it feels like is 45 is the very good grade, 44 is good, and 43 is just satisfactory. Scoring 41 or 42 is passable and below those shouldn't be mentioned. That isn't right. In the real world outside our fishbowl, anything 35 upwards already exceeds the social norm. The world average is 29.6. What has happened to us that we are unable to celebrate successes?
OH! And my chicken got 45 :D Okay, and the whole troop did well. I am pleazzzed.
So now I'm off to unpack in my new room. Working starts next week. Equally daunting tasks, I might say.

Very good points really. Although I must say that the degree of support in some areas of assessment exceeds world norms by quite a bit. I wish you all the best! :)
Hello Sir :)
I've heard about you. Thanks for stopping by :) Never would have thought that you would.
I think you're right. I guess maybe because the students want to give a lot, the teachers give a lot too - if you get what I mean. That doesn't really explain it away though :)
Thank you. I wish you all the best too.
